One of the most popular social media platforms on the planet right now is TikTok, the platform that lets you record a short video and even incorporate other people’s videos into your own to create humorous content or simply to show off while singing. Why is everyone talking about it, though?
What It Is
First of all, what even is TikTok? It is a free video-sharing app where the videos last up to 15 seconds. If you have ever used Vine, it is very similar in nature. It is especially popular with younger generations, like teens and children.
Why Is It Popular?
TikTok has been downloaded more than a billion times and there are about 800 million active users every month. Approximately 4 out of 5 people don’t simply browse videos – they create them as well. Most of the app’s users belong to Gen Z.
Now, what is it about TikTok that makes it so popular? There are several things to consider. First of all, it is a relatively new way of communicating your ideas in 15-second segments. Every generation has a form of communication that was not available to the previous ones, like beeping, paging, calling collect and so on (ask your parents, they know).
Secondly, it lets you be creative since it limits the time during which you can express yourself, leading to some very interesting ideas. You can lip-sync a song, show your transformation from one outfit, cosplay, or makeup to another, respond and react to videos of others, develop a catchphrase, have 15-second skits and so much more.
Thirdly, it is an app that is simply fun and that you can enjoy with your friends and family. Some people become famous through TikTok and there are even companies that pay influencers and TikTok users for advertisement. It can be a lucrative platform.
Why Not Use YouTube or Other Video-Sharing Platforms?
Do you remember when Twitter had a 140-character limit? It meant that you could express your thoughts, but you had to be concise and really believe you had something to say, though there were those that kind of missed the mark, like Jaden Smith. Regardless, it is the wide variety of filters, effects, and songs you can add to your video that has a time limit of 15 seconds that separates TikTok from other platforms.
YouTube is still number 1 when it comes to video creation and sharing, but its videos can go from a few seconds to hundreds or even thousands of hours. Furthermore, the platform exercises strict control in some cases, enough to get accounts banned for the smallest infractions, videos demonetized, and money seized from their creators with very little explanation and very few chances of appeal. Additionally, the platform may have become too mainstream.
